Websites have the ability to present information in a clear and engaging way, but like everything else - it's about balance. There's no need for excess text, images or even technology - because you can doesn't mean you have to. In fact, our website is just one page.
I recently dealt with a client that wanted to turn their website into one of Tolstoy’s epic novels - there was so much text that the website resembled a phone book.
Through experience, I am confident that most users of websites don’t want the long drawn-out version to anything – they simply want the content to "get to the point". One example is Twitter, I believe it is successful because it only allows for a maximum of 140 characters – it keeps the content simple and concise – without limitations, it would not be as popular or have the same impact.
Images are much the same thing – no need to bother with excess. On a website, images should relate to the subject and be interesting and relevant. If you’re using thumbnails, have them at a size where you can actually see the thumbnails – otherwise don’t bother. If you’re doing a product site and actually expect to sell anything online, create a user experience where the images can attempt to replicate a person actually being in a store and touching the product – instill confidence in your buyer with great images. Don’t complicate your website with endless amounts of “bad” images – just make sure the ones you use are of the highest quality.
Know your audience. Your audience should determine your content and images – more is not better. If the site is meant to sell, make your products the priority, if it meant to inform – inform without overwhelming, and lastly, always have an intuitive flow throughout the site.
Simplicity is a perspective you should engage in on your next project – it’s just not so simple.
Project reference: We recently worked on a website with Haven Books. Have a look at what clean and simple did for them.
Hi Annie!
Websites have the ability to present information in a clear and engaging way, but like everything else - it's about balance.

It's not often that we get to design and build a site for ourselves so this was a lot of fun. The new site allows us to showcase some of our recent work and to get a little extravagant on the design side whilst staying true to our philosophies. Since our site is powered by our own CMS, we thought it might be fun to open it up to the public and let everyone have a go at using it.
